WOVEN ART
—
My hand-woven artwork is an emotional response to the arctic landscape where I grew up, where the extreme absence and presence of light throughout the seasons have a strong influence on the mind and body. This concept has evolved and changes from project to project, but is at the core of most of my woven art pieces.
There is an incredible amount of invisible labour that goes into the making of my woven art pieces. My warps are often made from mixed material, and the wefts are rarely just one type of yarn. Blending materials give texture and tactility to the surface - each yarn offers something unique to the final look and behaves slightly different in the weave. However, this mix of material adds risk and complications throughout the process if not handled carefully, but also offers a complexity that make the work stand out.
My warps are hand dyed using Ikat techniques and/or painted, often in multiple stages, adding extra movement and layers of colour to the weaves. I accept that the dye has its own will and that to a certain degree what is created is always unique no matter how practiced. This is the beauty of the process of working with yarn, water and dye.
When it finally comes to weaving, I allow myself to become one with the loom. I enjoy the movement and rhythm of making, and I find motivation in the slow natural process of turning yarn into cloth. I patiently wait for the final result to emerge, and it is with excitement that I cut off the loom to reveal the hand painted weaves that will be finished to perfection before adorning the wall.
