WOVEN ART

Norway born textile artist and hand weaver Line Nilsen, painting a warp before weaving in her Nottingham studio.

My hand-woven artwork is an emotional response to the arctic landscape where I grew up, where the extreme absence and presence of light throughout the seasons have a strong influence on the mind and body. While this concept evolves with each project, it remains central to most of my woven art pieces.

Each creation involves an incredible amount of invisible labor. My warps often combine mixed materials, and my wefts rarely consist of a single yarn. Blending materials add texture and tactility to the surface — each yarn contributes something unique and behaves differently within the weave. While this material complexity introduces challenges, it also enhances the depth and character of the work, making each piece stand out.

I approach my work as a reverse engineering of the canvas, balancing a fine line between painting and weaving — a space where the worlds of craft and art converge. My warps are hand-painted prior to weaving, often in multiple stages, creating layers of color and movement that infuse each piece with dynamic energy. This process allows me to blend the tactile precision of weaving with the expressive freedom of painting, uniting the two disciplines into a single, harmonious practice.

I have developed a distinct painting style that draws from traditional techniques while embracing a contemporary expression. I love the unpredictability of working with yarn, water, and dye — how the materials take on a life of their own, shaping outcomes that are always unique despite careful planning. It is this dance between control and spontaneity that makes each piece a true reflection of my artistic process, bridging tradition and innovation in woven form.

When I weave, I find harmony in the rhythmic motion of the loom. The slow transformation of yarn into cloth is deeply meditative, and I eagerly anticipate cutting the finished work off the loom. Each piece is then meticulously refined to reveal the hand-painted weaves, ready to adorn the wall.
